Мы сегодня живем с чувством, будто бы старый мир заканчивается, а новый ещё не начался. Это происходило не только с нами, человечество уже проживало такой перелом.

Итак, конец XV века. Средневековая картина мира трещит по швам: ценности, правила, язык — всё меняется. Люди чувствуют смятение и растерянность. Они старательно ищут опору хоть в чем-то. В этот момент рыцарь-узник Томас Мэлори пишет «Смерть Артура» — последний роман Средневековья.

На лекции Армена Захаряна мы:

• поговорим про последний великий роман Средневековья;
• проследим эволюцию литературы от Средневековья до постмодерна;
•  пройдемся от Джеффри Чосера и главного героя этой лекции – рыцаря-узника Томаса Мэлори – до Леонардо да Винчи и Пьеро делла Франческа;
• узнаем, как и при каких обстоятельствах рождалось Новое время и как этот перелом отразился в литературе.

Не нужно заранее читать произведение. Не нужно разбираться в Средневековье. Лекция построена так, чтобы всё было понятно и близко без подготовки.

Today, many of us live with the feeling that the old world is coming to an end, while the new one has not yet begun. This is not the first time humanity has experienced such a rupture.

It is the end of the fifteenth century. The medieval worldview is beginning to crack: values, rules, and language are all changing. People feel confused and disoriented, searching for something — anything — to hold on to. At this moment, the knight and prisoner Thomas Malory writes Le Morte Darthur — the last romance of the Middle Ages.

At the lecture by Armen Zakharyan, we will:

• talk about the last great novel of the Middle Ages;
• trace the evolution of literature from the Middle Ages to postmodernism;
• move from Geoffrey Chaucer and the central figure of this lecture, the imprisoned knight Thomas Malory, to Leonardo da Vinci and Piero della Francesca;
• explore how the modern age began, under what conditions it emerged, and how this transformation was reflected in literature.

You do not need to have read the book. You do not need any background in medieval history. The lecture is designed to be clear, engaging, and accessible without any prior preparation.
