World Day Against the Death Penalty

October 10 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

This Saturday, we are joining our partners at ACAT Luxembourg to mark the European Day Against the Death Penalty, observed every year on 10 October.

Despite growing global support for the abolition of the death penalty, it is still used in a number of countries. Among those carrying out the highest numbers of executions are China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, North Korea, Iraq and Yemen. Belarus remains the only country in Europe where the death penalty is still applied. Executions also continue to take place in the United States.

Supporters of the death penalty often justify it as a deterrent. Yet research consistently shows that countries that retain capital punishment do not have lower crime rates than those that have abolished it. The death penalty also makes judicial errors irreversible and removes any possibility of rehabilitation or reintegration into society.

The death penalty is incompatible with human rights because it permanently deprives a person of the possibility of remorse and change. A society that cannot protect the rights of even its worst offenders cannot guarantee those rights for everyone else.
